Worlds of Minesweeper Worlds Online

Minesweeper Worlds Online is played on an infinite map, and that map is not a flat gray grid. It has terrain, continents, seasons and a few themed color schemes from past events. This page explains each one and says which are current and which are over.

What is current right now

  • Terrain and continents are part of every world, in both Solo and the Shared World.
  • Shared World seasons are 14 days by design and roll over automatically, so the live world changes from season to season.
  • No themed event is running at the moment. The three events described below have ended, and there is nothing upcoming to announce.
  • Color schemes earned in those events stay with the players who earned them.

Terrain: what the map looks like

The map is divided into 8x8 areas, and each area has a landscape. You will see sea and shallows, grassland in several shades, mountains from foothills up to snowy peaks, volcanoes, forests that range from sparse to deep and dense, deserts of sand and rock, and lakes.

An in-game tip says mine density varies depending on the terrain. The game does not publish exact numbers, so take it as a reason to read the numbers carefully on every landscape rather than as a rule you can rely on.

The look of the land can also change as the world is cleared. Zoom out through the Cell, Area, Continent and World levels and you can see the ground you have opened take shape as a map.

Continents

Every world starts on one landmass called Origin Land. As players clear more ground, new continents appear away from the starting point, and each one waits for a name.

In a Solo world

A new continent is born after milestones in the number of areas you have cleared. The game asks you to give it a name, and it offers suggestions such as Alka, Neria and Valo if you want a quick one.

In the Shared World

New continents emerge when the world's total cleared areas passes milestones that grow as the world grows. A banner announces "A new continent has emerged!" Any player can name a continent that has no name yet. The first name sticks, and only the player who chose it can rename it. The game shows who discovered a continent and who named it as two separate credits. For more on playing together, see the Shared World guide.

Seasons

The Shared World is organized into seasons. By design a season lasts 14 days, and seasons roll over automatically. While the next one is being set up, the Online button reads "New season is being prepared."

When a season ends, its map closes and becomes view only. The next world starts with a new seed, so it is a fresh map rather than a continuation of the old one, and past worlds cannot be revisited.

The Season Records screen keeps a summary of each finished season: areas cleared, participants, continents discovered, the named continents and who named them, the final top 100 ranking, and a picture of the map. Solo worlds are different. They are your own, saved to your account, with their own continents and milestones.

Color schemes and themed worlds

Besides the default look, the game has themed worlds. Inside the game they are called color schemes: Halloween, Cyberpunk, Mars and Ink Wash. They change how the map is colored and nothing else, so the rules and the meaning of the numbers stay exactly the same.

During a limited-time event, you could earn a scheme by finding 3 secrets. Once earned, it appears behind a "Color scheme" button in Solo World mode, and the default scheme is always available. For how the rest of the game works, see What is Minesweeper Worlds Online?.

The Shared World can also show these colors through gates. After you clear 10 areas there, and then every 20 more, a personal gate to another world may appear. Open it and confirm, and your map is recolored as the Mars, Cyberpunk or Ink Wash world. You can find up to 3 per season, and a Worlds button switches between them and the original. A gate is a color change only, not a separate map. Which app version includes gates may vary.

Sumi-e (Ink Wash)

Ended. The Sumi-e event, named Japanese Ink Painting in the app stores, ran from May 9 to June 5, 2026 (UTC). Players who found 3 secrets during the event earned the Ink Wash color scheme.

The scheme is named after sumi-e, the Japanese art of ink painting. In the app's other languages it appears as 墨絵 in Japanese, 수묵화 in Korean and Tinta china in Spanish.

Mars Exploration

Ended. The Mars Exploration event ran from June 6 to July 3, 2026 (UTC). Finding 3 secrets during the event earned the Mars color scheme.

Mars is a color scheme for World mode. It is not a different game or rule set, so every number means what it always means.

Cyberpunk World

Ended. The Cyberpunk World event ran from July 4 to July 31, 2026 (UTC), and it also asked players to find 3 secrets. The reward was the Cyberpunk color scheme.

It is the most recent of the three events. Anyone who earned the scheme kept it after the event ended.

Halloween

A Halloween color scheme exists in the app. We do not have dates for the Halloween event, so we do not list any here.

Whichever scheme you play on, the numbers work the same way. If you want a refresher before you open a new map, read what the numbers mean.
